News and Happenings

BOSTON BRINGS LOCAL RUNNERS TOGETHER

The Boston Marathon bombings made runners take notice and understand how we are very fortunate to participate in events like the Boston Marathon, the Peachtree Road Race,  and even small local 5K events. The aftermath of an event like this always brings out the good in people. It always makes people stand up and ask "how can I help, what can I do?"

For runners, the best thing we know how to help is to run. Throughout the year there are hundreds of races in Georgia that go to support great causes. From big events like the Komen Race for the Cure to the smallest of events supporting local schools or charities.

It was no surprise that local runners in Georgia and across the nation came together on April 22 for the Boston Solidarity Run. PTS Sports in Acworth, Big Peach Running Co. in Atlanta, Phidippides in Atlanta, and other running stores hosted runners to show support for Boston. Shirts like the one above were sold with proceeds go to the One Fund Boston.

ANOTHER LOCAL EVENT CALLS IT QUITS

Last month I wrote about the end of the US10K Classic. I just found out that another popular and long-running race is also not running this year. The Celebrate America 5K/10K was held every year in Alpharetta on Memorial Day. The run was put on my the Chattahoochee Women's Club (formerly the Alpharetta Junior Woman's Club) since 1996. The Club put an announcement on their web site stating that "due to rising costs of putting on a race, it was no longer profitable venture."

The event's proceeds when to local charities. The statement on the web site thanks the "runners, sponsors and volunteers over the years who have helped make the race successful."

This was a great event and a good location that had a good turnout year after year. It is sad to see this event not continue. For the full statement visit www.chattwoman.com.

The Three Levels of Running...

How serious a runner are you? I got to thinking recently about the various levels in the development of a serious runner. That is, how "in to" the discipline and culture of running is an individual who strives to become a competitive runner.
