Running for a Reason

The great thing about finding a 5K or a 10K or even a marathon to register and train for is the added benefit of helping a charity. There are some big events, like the Komen Race for the Cure, that are nationally known and raise a lot of money. There are also those small local runs that help raise money for a school or program. So the next time you cross the finish line of the race and feel good about your run, giver yourself an extra pat on the back for the cause you supported that day.

News and Happenings

Ironman coming to Chattanooga

While the focus of RunGeorgia is mostly Georgia and mostly running, we sometimes step outside of the border when something will make an impact in the state.

Last week Ironman Triathlon announced that their next new venue in series will be Chattanooga, TN. This is great news for Georgians as it gives locals another venue within close driving distance. Ironman Florida in Panama City has been the closest venue (about a 5 hour drive), the Chattanooga venue is a quick 2 hour drive up I75.

Many triathletes have traveled to Chattanooga for the sprint and international distance triathlons that are held each summer. This should be a great venue for the Ironman and many Georgians have already expressed excitement with the announcement.

Ironman Chattanooga inaugural race will be held September 28, 2014 - the 11th race in the Ironman U.S. Series.

From the Ironman press release, CEO Andrew Messick comments on the new venue: "We selected Chattanooga as it is a beautiful city and a premier outdoor sports destination. We are thrilled to bring Ironman here and to partner with the city to deliver a top level event.

The race will begin with a single loop, 2.4 mile swim in the Tennessee River, followed by a two loop bike ride for the 112 mile trek and then a two-and-a-half loop course for the marathon. The official charity of the event will be the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America.

General entry registrations will begin Wednesday, September 4 at 12:00 p.m. General entry cost will be $650.

Training and Racing for Purpose...

"So, how is your training going?" That is the typical question I pose to my distance athletes throughout the year and particularly during the summer. And most summers I am always disappointed in many of their replies.

They are training, but not to the level they need to make long steady improvement within the season arrives...
